How to Clear the Windows Update Cache
Tip of the Week
Keeping your hard drive free from clutter can be tough, especially when you’re constantly saving data, constantly taking and editing pictures and videos of the kids, your fur babies and family. Summer is the time of vacation and graduations after all. The other issue you have to deal with is all of the security issues that are out there that require OS level updates as well. If you’re running a Windows laptop, this can be an even bigger space hog than the pictures and videos the kids…
When you start running out of space on your Windows laptop, here’s a cool little tip that should get you back a decent amount of space pretty darn quick – clear your Windows Update Cache. You’ll likely get gigabytes of space back PDQ.
To clear your Windows Update Cache, follow these steps:
- Click Start.
- In the Search bar, type Disk Cleanup. On the right side of the panel, click Run as Administrator.

- The app will run and analyze the files on your SSD.

- Click the box next to “Windows Update Cleanup” in the resulting dialog box.
Scroll through the list of “files to delete,” and select any additional items you also wish to clean up

- When completed, click the OK Button

- Click the Delete Files button on the confirmation dialog box.

- Disk Cleanup will delete all the files related to your chosen options, returning some much-needed disk space.

Run this utility as often as needed to restore wasted space to the operating system. Once completed, you should have enough space to save anything and everything you want to keep, especially those Summertime family memories.
