Update your Software!

Tip of the Week

Keeping your software up to date is crucial for maintaining your system’s security and functionality. Operating system updates, antivirus software updates, and updates for other applications often include security patches that address vulnerabilities exploited by cybercriminals. Regularly check for and install updates to protect your devices and data from emerging threats.

For Windows – On your Windows Machine, follow these steps

  1. Click the Start button in the bottom left or center of your taskbar.
  2. Find and click the Settings icon.
  3. The Settings app will appear.  Click Windows Update on the bottom left column.

  4. When Windows Update appears, click the Check for Updates button and search for available OS updates.  You should install ALL that are available.

  5. If the updates require restarting your PC, a notification “restart required” will appear to the right of the update.
  6. Ensure that you plug in your PC.  Allow Windows Update to restart your computer.  Please do not turn off your PC or unplug it.
  7. Windows Update often holds required updates back until all the necessary prerequisite updates are installed. Please rerun Windows Update and install ALL available updates, and you will see the screen shown above.

 

For Mac – On your Mac, follow these steps

  1. Click the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your screen
  2. Choose System Settings
    01 - Update software
  3. Click General – Software Updates
    02 - Software Update
  4. If an OS update or a security patch is available, it will appear in the Software Update area.   Install all of the updates that appear.  As shown above, a message similar to the one I received indicates that my software is current.
  5. The update process may require multiple restarts before the Mac’s login screen finally appears.
  6. Plug in your PC and allow Windows Update to restart it. Please do not turn off your PC or unplug it.
  7. Repeat the above process as many times as necessary to ensure you install all available updates for your PC.
