What to Do if Your Phone is Stolen
Tip of the Week
When you buy a new phone, the last thing on your mind is that someone might steal it from you. You want to concentrate on the new tech, the new features, the new display and how truly awesome the device feels when you hold it. Most people have their personal and financial lives on their smartphones – you have access to your bank accounts, your credit cards, and, in some states, your digital driver’s license or other state ID.
When you lose your phone or when your phone is stolen, no doubt you’re going to be concerned about who has it, what they’re doing with it, and if they actually have access to all of your personal information. If you lose, or have your phone stolen, here are three of the most important things you absolutely MUST do immediately if your phone goes missing.

- Freeze any bank accounts that can be accessed from the iPhone and change the passwords on every account you access through the device. (Yes, a lot of work, but it will save your butt.)
- Contact your service provider and ask them to lock the SIM card. (They can lock both physical and eSIMs.)
- If you have an iPhone, Apple can also remotely lock your device if you log into your iCloud account and report it stolen. Also, go to https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201472 for other useful information regarding a stolen iPhone.
